The 20th match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup will be played at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on the 21st of October, and we will get to watch England battle it out against South Africa. It is a doubleheader on Saturday for these two countries as they also take on each other in the semi-final of the Rugby World Cup - you can find my prediction for that match right here.
Both England and South Africa lost their last match, so they will be eager to put that behind them and pick up a win. Read on to find out who I think will win and I also give you the best betting odds that some of my favourite cricket betting sites are currently offering.
💯 England v South Africa Betting Odds
Winning money when gambling is always nice, but I feel that importance should be put on the entertainment value that is available. If you are not finding gambling fun at any point, I suggest you stop right away as you could end up making foolish mistakes. One thing that makes sports betting fun is market variety, and markets are not in short supply when it comes to betting on cricket.
I have been following and betting on cricket matches for many years now, and below I am going to provide you with the top betting odds for three markets that I feel are the most entertaining.
Match Winners Odds: England v South Africa
Here are the match winner odds for England v South Africa:
Team | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
England | 1.64 | 1.64 | 1.73 | 1.66 | 1.73 |
South Africa | 1.95 | 1.95 | 2.10 | 1.95 | 2.10 |
Top Batsman Odds: England v South Africa
In my opinion, you will struggle to find a more exciting market than the top batsman market, which is where you have to predict the top run-scorer for one of the teams. I love placing such wagers because it then allows me to live and breathe every ball that my batsman faces. Every boundary can be celebrated, while his dismissal can be met with a series of groans.
While there is plenty of fun to be had from such a market, I need to emphasise its difficulty levels. It is a hard bet to get right for novices because one small mistake could spell the end for your batter. Below I have given the current top batsman odds for three players from both teams:
England:
Team | ||
---|---|---|
Joe Root | 4.00 | 3.00 |
Jonny Bairstow | 4.50 | 3.60 |
Dawid Malan | 4.33 | 3.25 |
South Africa:
Team | ||
---|---|---|
Quinton de Kock | 4.00 | 3.25 |
Rassie van der Dussen | 4.50 | 3.25 |
Aiden Markram | 5.00 | 4.00 |
Top Wicket Taker Odds: England v South Africa
Just like some players much prefer to bat and others much prefer to bowl, cricket fans also have their preferred disciplines. If you consider yourself to be on Team Bowler and feel that you have more knowledge about a team's bowling unit, then you can forget the top batsman market and go for the top wicket taker market instead. If your selected bowler gets the same number of wickets as a teammate, the player with the best economy will win.
Below are the top wicket taker odds for three potential winners from each team:
England:
Team | ||
---|---|---|
Reece Topley | 4.33 | 3.25 |
David Willey | 5.00 | 4.00 |
Adil Rashid | 4.00 | 3.25 |
South Africa:
Team | ||
---|---|---|
Kagiso Rabada | 3.50 | 3.00 |
Lungi Ngidi | 4.50 | 3.20 |
Gerald Coetzee | 5.00 | 3.60 |
🔍 England v South Africa Match Winner Prediction
As can be seen from the match winner odds that are available for this game, the bookies believe that this is going to be a tricky match to call, and I firmly agree. England entered this competition as the favourites alongside India, but they have already lost two matches, and are running the risk of meekly letting their title go. South Africa, on the other hand, got off to a great start with two wins, but they suffered a big setback with defeat to the Dutch.
Truth be told, I really do not know how this match will plan out, but throughout the competition so far, apart from in the match against the Netherlands, I feel that South Africa have played better cricket. England were thrashed by New Zealand are were abject in defeat to Afghanistan.
England have a strong batting line-up, but their bowling attack is too one-dimensional for my liking. They have found it hard to bowl a consistent line and length, and any bad ball will be severely punished on these Indian pitches. South Africa's bowling attack is better, and I think this will help them win the match on Saturday.
My England v South Africa winner prediction: South Africa to win!
✔️ England v South Africa CWC Betting Tips
It is now time for some England v South Africa CWC betting tips:
Match Winner: South Africa to Win
These teams not only have very close odds for this match, but they also have a very close head-to-head record. England and South Africa have played 69 ODI games against each other, and South Africa have 33 wins to England's 30 - there has been 1 draw and 5 no results. Such stats highlight how close these teams have always been.
England's bowling attack has let them down in this tournament, so they owe the batsmen a much better performance this time around. The likes of Chris Woakes and Sam Curran do not seem suited to the wickets on offer, and this was emphasised against Afghanistan when they were both hit for plenty. If they bowl short and wide at South Africa, then the world record highest score might be in danger.
South Africa played poorly in all departments against the Netherlands, and maybe this can be put down to a bit of complacency. They will not be complacent against England, and I am backing their bowlers to lead them to their third victory in four matches.
Those who want to bet on South Africa can find odds of 2.10 at William Hill.
England's Top Batsman Winner: Joe Root to Win
Joe Root is the best batsman in this England team, and he has been in decent touch at this tournament. Yes, he got out cheaply against Afghanistan, but the ball that bowled him did keep much lower than any batsman would have expected. The Wankhede Stadium should have a much truer bounce, so he will not have to worry about one keeping low. England have many quality batsmen, but Root's wicket is the top prize.
Those who want to bet on Root to be the top scorer for England can find odds of 4.00 at William Hill.
South Africa Top Batsman Winner: Quinton de Kock to Win
South Africa have one of the strongest top orders in world cricket, and Quinton de Kock is my favourite one to watch out of all of them. When he is at the top of his game, it is near enough impossible to get him out, and he will score fours and sixes with minimal effort. He already has two centuries in this tournament, and he will be looking forward to coming up against an under-performing England bowling unit.
William Hill are offering odds of 4.00 for those who want to back him to top score.
England's Top Wicket Taker: Reece Topley to Win Top Wicket Taker
Reece Topley was the only England fast bowler who could hold his head up high after the defeat to Afghanistan as he showed off his pace variation and skill on a relatively flat wicket, while the likes of Curran and Woakes just tried the same thing continuously, even though they were being dispatched. Topley has been my favourite fast bowler for England over the last few years, and his height and variation should cause the South African batsmen some issues.
If you think Topley will be England's best bowler, then currently have odds of 4.33 available to their punters.
South Africa's Top Wicket Taker: Kagiso Rabada to Win Top Wicket Taker
South Africa have many top fast bowlers that they can call upon, but my favourite one at the moment is Kagiso Rabada. I love watching him bowl at full speed, and I feel that England's batters will be extra cautious against him. Now, there is nought wrong with being careful against a top bowler, but being overly cautious can lead to some silly mistakes.
If you would like to put money on Rabada to take the most wickets against England, then are offering odds of 3.50.
