Those of you who are into your darts will be well aware that the darting world used to be split into two, with the British Darts Organisation (BDO) coming existence in 1973 and the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) that was created in 1992. This split came into being because of the desire to earn a lot more money, meaning that the Embassy World Championship that took place in 1993 was the last event to take place in a unified sport.

This might not seem that relevant to you, but what was relevant is that the Grand Slam of Darts, despite being a PDC event, allowed the best players from the BDO to participate without risking losing their membership. This competition came into being back in 2007 and it used to be the only darts competition in the UK that saw members from both organisations compete against each other.

However, the BDO went into administration at the end of 2020, so the Grand Slam of Darts 2021 will not have both PDC and BDO representatives for the first time ever. Read on to find out all you need to know about betting on the PDC Grand Slam of Darts, which is scehduled for the 13th to the 21st of November at the Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton.

History of the Grand Slam of Darts

Grand Slam Darts Logo

Obviously, due to its relatively young age when compared to other darts tournaments, there is still plenty of history for the Grand Slam Darts to make. The inaugural edition of this competition was played at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall in 2007, and it saw 32 of the best darts players from the PDC and the BDO battle it out to be crowned the competition's first ever winner. The final saw Phil Taylor take on Andy Hamilton, and the former came out on top. He also went on to lift the trophy in 2008 and in 2009.

In 2010, Scott Waites made it to the final against James Wade, where the former went on to win 16-12, making him the only ever BDO player to win the title. Since the BDO was dissolved in 2020, he will forever be the only BDO player to win this title. Taylor got back to winning ways in 2011, was beaten by the eventual winner Raymond Van Barneveld in 2012, and won the title once again in 2013 to solidify himself as one of the best darts players ever.

Michael Van Gerwen than arrived on the scene and won three titles in a row between 2015 and 2017. Gerwyn Price then claimed the trophy in 2018 and 2019. It was not until 2020 that a player outside the spotlight went on to win the event - Portugal's Jose de Sousa beat Wade 16-12 in the final. The tournament was played with no crowd due to the pandemic, and the lack of crowd pressure could be one of the reasons why there was an unexpected winner.

The Structure of the Tournament

There are 32 participants that take place in the Darts Grand Slam, and 16 of these are winners or runners-up from PDC qualifying tournaments. Below we have listed the events that supply a place for the winner and runner-up at the Grand Slam of Darts schedule:

  • PDC World Darts Championship
  • Last year's Grand Slam of Darts
  • World Matchplay
  • Premier League Darts
  • World Grand Prix
  • Master
  • PDC World Youth Championship
  • UK Open
  • Players Championship Finals
  • European Championship
  • Champions League of Darts
  • World Series of Darts Finals

If the champion or runner-up of a competition has already qualified for the Grand Slam of Darts courtesy of a different event, then the qualifying places for that event are moved to another tournament. If there happens to be fewer than 16 places filled by the tournaments that we just listed above for you, then PDC European Tour tournaments below are taken into consideration.

  • European Darts Open
  • German Darts Grand Prix
  • German Darts Championship
  • European Darts Grand Prix
  • Austrian Darts Open
  • Austrian Darts Championship
  • Dutch Darts Open
  • Czech Darts Open
  • European Darts Matchplay
  • International Darts Open
  • Gibraltar Darts Trophy

If the 16 places still have not been filled up after these competitions, then the winners from the Players Championships are added. Any remaining places are filled using the Order of Merit. The PDC also holds a qualifying event for this competition a month or so before it is due to start, and there are 8 places up for grabs.

Additionally, when the BDO was still in existence, they had places available to the BDO World Championship male and female winner and the BDO World Trophy male and female winner. Also, the top ranked players also invited. Obviously, since the BDO no longer exists, the above BDO qualifying spots that we mentioned have been given to the PDC Development Tours and PDC Challenge.

How the Draw Works

Once all 32 players have qualified, they are put into draws so that the Grand Slam of Darts draw can be made. The pools, before the BDO went into administration, were decided as follows:

  • Pool A - PDC Seeded Players
  • Pools B and C - PDC Qualifiers
  • Pool D - BDO Representatives

At the time of writing, it was not yet known how the different pools will be made up for the draw. However, as usual, there will be eight groups of four players, with the top two players in the Grand Slam of Darts tables qualifying for the knockout stage. All group games are the best of nine legs, and two points are awarded for a win.

The Group A winner will play the runner-up of Group B, while the winner of Group B will play the runner-up of Group A. The Group C winner will play the runner-up of Group D, while the Group D winner will play the runner up of Group C. The same applies for the two qualifiers from Group E and Group F and from Group G and Group H.

The Round of 16 is the best out of 19 legs, the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final are the best out of 31 legs. These are all knockout matches, so it is winner takes all.

The Prize Pool

Like with most competitions that have been around for a number of years, the prize pool for the Grand Slam is bigger now than it was when it started back in 2007. For instance, in 2007 the winner won just £80,000, while the runner-up collected £35,000 from the total pot of £300,000. Nowadays, the Grand Slam of Darts prize money is worth £550,000, with the winner claiming £125,000 and the runner-up earning £65,000. The player that wins the group also gets a bonus of £3,500, which is something that was added during the 2020 edition.

The 2021 Grand Slam of Darts Participants

Grand Slam of Darts Betting Websites

Nowadays, sports betting is something that is popular in all corners of the globe, and darts betting is something that is growing in popularity. Darts is an entertaining sport to sit down and watch when there is no cash on the line, but when you add your own money into the equation by placing a bet, the entertainment levels increase drastically.

Darts betting is now so popular that you will find it hard to locate a sports betting site that does not provide odds for and markets for all of the biggest darts tournaments. Darts fans in the United Kingdom have plenty of sportsbooks that they can open an account with, but some are better than others. Below we have given you an extensive list of betting sites that are great for betting on darts tournaments such as the 2021 Grand Slam of Darts:

  • William Hill
  • Ladbrokes
  • Betiton
  • Betfred
  • 10Bet
  • TonyBet

So, why do we rate these sports betting sites highly? What is it that makes them better than their rivals? Well, to start with, they have a good variety of markets and good odds for all the best darts competitions. When it comes to gambling, variety is important, and it helps to limit your chances of getting bored. Betting on a player to win a game is entertaining in itself, but there will be occasions when the odds that are available are not good since one player is a lot better than the other. In this scenario, it is better to find another market to place your bets on.

In addition to the above, these betting sites also offer great bonuses and promos. Being able to take advantage of a Welcome Bonus when you open an account with a bookie is great is it means that you can make some bets on dart events such as the Grand Slam of Darts without needing to risk any of your own money. Whenever you are betting using a Welcome Bonus or some other type of bonus money, such as a free bet, we recommend that you make a risky bet as you have nothing to lose if you end up predicting wrongly.

So, if you are seriously considering betting on the 2021 Grand Slam of Darts, then we really recommend that you take the time to read our in-depth reviews for the sportsbooks that we listed above. In these reviews, you will find all the info that you need to help you find the best online sportsbook for you.

Grand Slam of Darts Outright Betting and Other Markets

When it comes to betting on this darts tournament, or any other darts event for that matter, there are plenty of markets for you to choose from, and this is what we are going to look at right now.

Match betting: With this type of bet, all you are doing is betting on the player that you think will go ahead and win a particular match. If your player goes on to win, you win your bet. If your chosen player loses, so do you. It really is that simple.

Most 180s: A score of 180 is the highest that you can get in a game of darts, and the crowd usually goes wild when a player scores a 180. You will usually have the option of being able to bet on the player that you think will go on to score the most 180s in a particular match.

Highest checkout: The highest checkout in a game of darts is 170, which is made up of a bullseye and two treble 20s. This is a hard checkout for players to land, so bookies will often offer a highest checkout market. With this type of bet, you simply have to predict which player will get the highest checkout.

Correct score: With this type of bet, you just have to predict what the score will be between two players. This market can be lucrative for small tournaments with matches that are the best of 3 legs, but it can be tricky to predict the score of the major competitions where it can be the best out of 31 legs.

Nine-dart finish: In a standard game of darts, both players are racing to reach 501 and checkout via double or a bullseye. This can be done with various combos, but the fewest number of darts that it can be achieved in is nine. A nine-dart finish is rare, like a 147 in snooker, and you can bet on whether there will be one in a match or whole tournament.

Best Bonuses for Grand Slam of Darts Betting

Earlier we told you that sports betting sites will offer their customers bonuses that can be used on big darts tournaments such as the Grand Slam of Darts, which means you can bet without having to risk any of your own money. The world of online gambling is a really competitive one, and this is why online sportsbooks are forced to offer their players attractive welcome bonuses. When new players sign up to a bookie or an online casino, they will want them to stick around for a long period, and the way that bookies ensure that this is the case is by offering bonuses and promos that you can use on many sports.

Not all bonuses are created with the same greatness, so we have taken it upon ourselves to save you some precious time by doing some research and finding some of the best ones for you. Bookies have to consistently update their Welcome Bonus and other promos in order to stay one step ahead of their competitors, so there is a slight chance that the bonuses that we are about to speak about below are different by the time you come to read this. We must stress that we will always do our utmost to update all of our pages, but we cannot always keep up with the changes.

TonyBet: If you believe that TonyBet is the sports betting site that you want to register with, then you can take advantage of a £50 that you can use on whatever sporting event you like.

10Bet: If you read our 10Bet review and liked what you have read, then open an account with them and claim the £50 Welcome Bonus that is on offer. This bonus money can be used on any darts event that you like, or any other sport that you like.

BoyleSports: If this is the sportsbook that you have been looking for, then register with them and you can make use of a £100 welcome offer. Like with the three bonuses above, you can use the bonus money on any sport that you like, but we do recommend that you use it on matches in the Grand Slam of Darts.

When you are using bonuses and promotions there is something that you have to do before you start making your bets and that is read the different T&Cs that apply. You will never come across a bonus that does not have any T&Cs attached, and if you read each T&C you will be doing yourself a favour because you will learn about the wagering requirements, the number of days that you have to complete them, and whether there are any restrictions on payment methods.

Odds for Grand Slam Darts Betting

Odds are changing all the time because sportsbooks are aware that if they offer better odds than their competitors then they will stand out and standing out is vital if a sportsbook wants to attract new players. Us humans love a bargain when we are spending our own money, so with regard to betting on sports, you should always do a bit of research to find out the bookies that are offering the best betting odds. The winner of the Grand Slam of Darts gets a huge cash prize, and you can make a nice profit yourself if you bet using the best odds around.

To push this point further, we are now going to give a quick example. Let us say that Michael van Gerwen is playing Gary Andersen in a match at the Grand Slam of Darts. You take a look at a couple of bookmakers and see that van Gerwen has odds of 2.10 to win with one bookmaker, and odds of 2.00 to win with another. If you put twenty quid on van Gerwen to be victorious with the first bookie, then you will make a profit of £22. If you put the same amount of money on van Gerwen to win with the second bookmaker, then you will land a profit of £20. Now, you might sit there and tell yourself that it does not matter if you miss out on a mere £2, but if you win 100 bets in a year and you miss out on £2 each time, you have lost a considerable profit.

So, what sports betting sites have the best odds for betting on darts events such as the Grand Slam of Darts? Well, when it comes to great darts betting, we really do suggest that you take a closer look at these four sportsbooks:

  • Unibet
  • Betfred
  • Ladbrokes

Live Betting on the Grand Slam of Darts

It was the 90s when sports betting first made the transition online, and while this was great because it meant that we could now bet on our favourite sports without having to leave home. However, there was no live betting available at the time, meaning that if you wanted to place a wager on a darts event, you needed to do so before the first dart is thrown. Thankfully, things have improved in the online sports betting scene since then, and now most sportsbooks that you come across have their own live betting section.

Making live wagers is something that avid sports bettors love to do, which is why you will find it difficult to find a sports betting site that does not have a live betting feature. Bookmakers are well aware that if they do not offer live betting then they will end up losing a lot of customers. We are sure that you will want to bet on Grand Slam of Darts live scores, so below we have provided you with four bookies that we feel have some of the best live gambling on offer:

  • Betiton
  • Bwin
  • Betfair
  • William Hill

When you are searching for a sportsbook with a great live betting section, what should you keep a close eye on? Well, to start with, a live betting arena will only be as good as the markets and odds that are on offer. A sportsbook that offers only a few live betting markets is one that people will get bored of quickly. Furthermore, we mentioned that it is vital to bet with good odds when placing wagers, and this rule still stands when making live bets. You will certainly not be disappointed by the live betting features of the four bookies we just listed for you.

Grand Slam of Darts Betting Tips

You can dive right in and start betting on darts if you want, but if this is your betting strategy, then the most likely scenario is that you end up losing a good amount of money. Below we have given you some useful Grand Slam of Darts betting tips that we suggest you have a good read of before you go and do any Grand Slam Darts betting.

Pay Attention to Head-to-Head Records

Dart players, just like athletes in any other sport, have competitors that they always do well against and rivals that they often perform poorly against. For instance, in the darts world, Michael Smith, who recently finished as a Premier League and World Championship runner-up, has a really dire record against Peter Wright and James Wade. He also has a mental block whenever he plays van Gerwen, having lost to him in every major tournament they have played each other in.

So, before you go ahead and put your money on a player to win a match, you should do a quick Google search to see how he has fared against his opponent in the past. If he has a poor record against him, we suggest that you find someone else to bet on.

Check Out the Venue

Take a look at where the tournament will be played and then see whether any of the players that will be participating in the competition are local. The crowd can play a big part in who goes on to win a darts match. If there is a local player playing at an event, then the crowd will mostly be cheering them on to victory.

Additionally, if the crowd happens to not like a player, for whatever reason, then they will definitely not be shy about letting them know. Some players will be negatively impacted by this, while others will thrive under the extra pressure. Thus, with regard to darts betting, we recommend that if you are betting on an event that has a local player in it that you think about backing them as the crowd might get on their opponent's back and help put them off.

Pay Attention to Form

Form, like it is in any sport, is important in darts. Those who watch this sport often will have seen many great players struggle when they are having a dip in form and confidence. However, the nature of this sport means that an unexpected win versus a big player can click them back into gear and see their form return.

The thing that you have to remember is that the same players play against each other quite regularly, so their form is a very good indicator as to how a match might turn out. However, like with every sport, there is nothing that is guaranteed. In the world of darts, anyone can beat anyone.

Conclusion: Should You Bet on the Grand Slam of Darts?

With regard to darts betting, there are many different tournaments that you can put your money on, but we recommend that you bet on the Grand Slam of Darts. Why do we suggest this? Well, it is a really entertaining darts event with the best players in the darting world, and you can make it even more entertaining by betting on it. There is not a lot better than watching your favourite darts players win and making a profit at the same time. We believe that all the info that we provided you with above will be very useful when it comes to betting on darts tournaments such as the Grand Slam of Darts.
