There are just eight teams left in the Champions League, meaning that we have well and truly reached the business end of this competition. The Quarter-Final draw was recently done, and a number of tasty ties were thrown up, with one of them being Manchester City, the champions of England, taking on Atletico Madrid, the champions of Spain. There should be plenty of action for us to enjoy and bet on, and below we are going to give you our prediction for this match.
Preview: The Fixture Dates and Champions League Record
The Quarter-Finals of the Champions League are played out over two legs, with the team that scores the most goals in the two legs advancing to the Semi-Finals. The first leg of this match will be played at the Etihad on Tuesday the 5th of April at 20:00 GMT, while the return leg at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium will be played on Wednesday the 13th of April at 20:00 GMT. This is 180 minutes of football (maybe more if it goes to extra-time) that you do not want to miss, so make sure to set a reminder on your phone.
Man City
Manchester City have won everything at domestic level in England, but there is one trophy that still eludes them and that they want the most, and this is the Champions League trophy. They have spent so much money building a very talented squad of players that it would be almost criminal if they did not get their hands on this prestigious trophy sometime soon.
They made it to the final last year, but were beaten 1-0 in the final by Chelsea. The best Champions League betting sites all had Man City as the favourites to win, but they failed to show up, and this is something that will still disappoint their players and fans to this day.
Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid have also never won the Champions League, and they will feel that they have a very good chance of doing so this time around, if they get past City, of course. They have been to three Champions League finals in their history, but have lost on all three occasions. Their first defeat came
against Bayern Munich in 1974, while their other two defeats were against Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016.
Man City vs Atletico Madrid Head to Head
When you are thinking about making a bet on a football game, it is always a smart move to look at what has gone before in previous meeting between the two teams. Why do we recommend this? Well, it will give you an idea as to who often comes out on top in such a fixture, and this can have a big impact on who will win the next game between the two teams. In sport, it is not rare for one team to have something of a psychological edge over an opponent, and this can have an impact on the final outcome.
However, when it comes to Man City vs Atletico Madrid in men's football, there is no head-to-head record to take a look at because these two sides, believe it or not, have never played against each other. So, when you sit down to watch this match to see how it plays out, you will be watching a piece of history. There will be plenty of talent on show in this first ever meeting between the two sides, so it is bound to be an entertaining match.
Manchester City have the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Ruben Dias, and Bernardo Silva, while Atletico Madrid boast the talents of Antoine Griezmann, Joao Felix, Luis Suarez, Rodrigo de Paul, Yannick Carrasco, and Jan Oblak.
Man City vs Atletico Madrid: Road to the Quarter-Finals
Another thing that you should look at before placing bets on a big game such as Manchester City against Atletico Madrid is the path that both sides had to take to make it to the final eight. Obviously, if one team had a harder path to the last eight and still made it through comfortably, it is a sign that they can go on to succeed in the quarter-final.
Manchester City were drawn in a group alongside Paris Saint-Germain, Club Brugge, and RB Leipzig. They finished at the top of their group with 12 points from their six matches, which was one point above PSG in second place. It was important that they finished first as this meant that they were drawn against Sporting CP instead of Real Madrid, who went on to knock PSG out. City went to Portugal for the first leg of their last 16 match and scored five unanswered goals, all but booking a spot in the Quarter-Finals with one leg left to play.
Atletico Madrid were drawn in what was definitely the "Group of Death" as they had to play against Liverpool, Porto, and AC Milan. Liverpool won all of their games and topped the group with 18 points, while Atletico Madrid won just the two, but it was enough to see them sneak second spot with seven points to their name. In the Round of 16, they were drawn against Manchester United, and after a hard-thought 180 minutes they made it through to the Quarter-Finals thanks to a 2-1 win on aggregate.
Man City vs Atletico Madrid Odds
When you have a look at the odds that are on offer at EPL betting sites, you will see that not only are Man City favourites to win the English Premier League, but they are also favourites to go on to win the Champions League for the first time in their history. Top bookmakers such as Bet365, William Hill, and BetFred have them at odds of 15/8 to go on to lift the trophy. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, are rank outsiders to go on and win this prestigious trophy for
the first time in their history. The aforementioned bookmakers have them at odds of 24/1 to lift the title.
What about the Man City odds for them to win this tie against Atletico Madrid? Well, Man City are overwhelming favourites with bookies such as Bet365, BoyleSports, and Betway offering odds as little as 1.40 for them to win the first leg. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, have been given odds of 7.50 by the same bookies to win the first leg.
There are no odds on offer for the second leg because established and new betting sites like to see what happens in the first leg before they go on to offer odds for the return leg.
Man City vs Atletico Madrid Tips
Over 2.5 Goals in the First Leg: When it comes to Man City fixtures, there are usually plenty of goals scored, so in the first leg we suggest that you put some money on their being over 2.5 goals. Yes, Atletico Madrid have a solid defence, but we really do not see it being strong enough to keep City's prolific forwards out. Additionally, Atletico have their own talent up front, so we do not see City keeping a clean sheet either.
Both Teams to Score - Yes: If you do not want to go for more than three goals in the first leg, then you should consider going for both teams to score. We think that this will be the case in both legs, due to the attacking talent that is on display.
Kevin de Bruyne Assist: The Belgian maestro loves scoring goals, like any midfielder does, but he also loves to provide assists to his teammates. Since the 2017/18 English Premier League, he has 52 assists to his name, which is nine more than Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, who both sit in second place with 43 assists apiece. Thus, we would definitely not be surprised to see de Bruyne supply at least one assist in this tie.
Our Final Prediction
This will be a fiercely contested Quarter-Final, but we would put our money on Manchester City to come out on top over the two legs and make it to the Semi-Finals. If we were to try to predict the final aggregate score, we would go for a 2-1 City win at home and a 1-1 draw away, giving them a 3-2 aggregate win.
However, the odds will probably not be worth putting your money on because you will need to make a large wager in order to land a decent profit, so you might want to look at Asian handicap betting sites to see if you can change the odds in your favour. However, since it will be a close tie overall, we really do not recommend that you give Man City too much of a deficit to overcome.
Our Match Prediction: Manchester City to win.
