League One Title Contenders
Birmingham City
The Blues have lost just one of their opening 12 League One matches in 2024/25, and currently sit three points clear at the top of the table. They also boast a strong playing squad and the most expensive ever L1 player in Jay Stansfield.
Wrexham
On the back of two successive promotions, Wrexham sit third in League 1 with 25 points from 13 matches. Midfielder Ryan Barnett is leading the club’s promotion charge, having contributed five assists in 12 appearances so far.
Bolton Wanderers
Although Bolton is currently ninth in L1, they’ve just lost one of their previous seven matches and are a team in form. They also finished third last season, only to experience a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United in the playoff final.
League One Relegation Odds
A total of four teams will be relegated from League One in 2024/25, with each of these clubs subsequently dropping into the fourth tier of the EFL. Let’s take a look at the latest League One relegation odds!

Relegation Contenders
Burton Albion
Managerless Burton only escaped relegation by two points last season and is now winless in 13 League One games since April 27th, 2024. They’ve also lost six consecutive third-tier matches and are betting favourites for the drop.
Shrewsbury Town
The Shrews finished just four points two places above the relegation zone in 2023/24. They’re currently second from bottom in League One, having won just one of their previous nine matches. They also have the joint-worst defence in the league and often struggle for goals.
Crawley Town
While newly-promoted Crawley Town averages 61.2% possession per 90 so far in 2024/25, they’ve won just three of their 13 L1 games both home and away. This includes a recent run of one win in 10 matches, which has left the Red Devils 22nd and one point from safety.
League One Promotion Odds
You can also access competitive League One promotion odds at the best football betting sites. But outside of the title favourites, which other clubs are expected to compete for a place in the Championship this season?

Promotion Contenders
Huddersfield Town
The Terriers have made a solid start to life in League One, winning seven of their 13 matches and recently embarking on a four-game unbeaten run. They currently sit fifth in the table. The versatile Ben Wiles has also started the season well, contributing seven goal involvements in 13 appearances so far.
Wycombe Wanderers
Wycombe only finished 16th in L1 last season, before losing the opening two matches of the new campaign as well. However, they’ve since embarked on a 10-match unbeaten run (winning eight of these games) and risen to second in the league. They’re also the league’s top scorers with 26 goals.
Stockport County
Stockport currently sit 12th in League One, but they’ve only lost two of their 12 matches and were impressive when winning the L2 title last season. However, they’ve only won once in their previous six attempts, and will need to improve their form markedly to remain in the hunt for promotion.
Barnsley
After finishing sixth last season and losing in the playoff semifinals to Bolton, the Tykes have started the new campaign well and currently sit seventh in the 2024/25 table. They’ve only lost one of their previous six matches too (to promotion rivals Huddersfield) and are good value to finish in the playoff places.
League One Betting Tips 2024/25 Season
Regardless of how you choose to bet on League One, your picks must be informed and well-researched. Here are some expert League One betting tips to help in this regard.
Tip 1 -- Back Birmingham to Win the Title
Despite being relegated from the Championship last season, Birmingham has retained the core of their playing squad while investing heavily in reinforcements. These include £15 million forward Jay Stansfield (who has the distinction of being League One’s most expensive ever signing) and fellow forward Alfie May (who won the L1 Golden Boot in 2023/24 with 23 goals for Charlton Athletic). The Blues also top the table after 12 matches average an impressive 69.3% possession per 90, and can be backed to win the L1 title at a price of 1.29 with Betarno.
Tip 2 - Take a Punt on Wrexham to Become Champions
One of the best football betting tips is to cover as many outcomes as possible when engaging in outright betting. This increases your chances of winning, while it’s possible to optimise stake amounts and guarantee a profit so long as one of your picks is successful. In this case, consider deploying a small percentage of your outright bankroll on Wrexham to win the L1 title. The Dragons have earned two successive promotions and currently sit third in League One, while they have the best defensive record in the division and an impressive goals-to-shot ratio of 0.14. You can back Wrexham to lift the L1 title at a price of 13.00 with Betarno.
Tip 3 - Pick Bolton to Win Promotion
Bolton have finished in the playoff places for two consecutive seasons now, while they were only five points short of automatic promotion last season. Despite being stunned by Oxford in the 2023/24 playoff final, the Trotters were the league’s second top scorers overall and boast genuine firepower in the form of Northern Ireland forward Dion Charles (who has contributed 55 goals in 132 matches for Bolton). Their recent run of good form has seen them move to within two points of the playoff places, so consider backing them to win promotion this time around at a price of 3.50 with Betiton.
Betting Market | Selection | Odds |
---|---|---|
League One Title Winner | Birmingham City | 1.29 |
League One Title Winner | Wrexham | 13.00 |
To Win Promotion from League One | Bolton Wanderers | 3.50 |

League One 2024/25 Markets
Having covered the best League One sportsbooks and the competition’s latest odds, we’re now going to drill a little deeper into the most popular betting markets. These include:
Outright Champion
One of the most straightforward markets requires you to bet on the League One outright champion. In 2024/25, for example, you can bet on Birmingham to win the L1 title at odds of 1.29 with Betarno. Usually, outright betting unlocks competitive odds, due to the sheer number of potential winners and outcomes.
1X2
The 1x2 market may also be described as the money line, which requires you to pick the winner of a particular match. A ‘1X2’ bet is so-called because it incorporates all three betting outcomes, with ‘1’ reflecting a home win, ‘2’ representing an away victory and ‘X’ depicting the draw.
Both Teams to Score (BTTS)
In this even money market, you can wager on whether or not both teams will score in a specific match. You can use historical data to inform your picks too. For example, both teams scored in 74% of Charlton’s L1 games in 2023/24, while this occurred in just 57% of Wigan’s matches (and 39% of their home games).
Over/Under Goals
This is another even-money bet, through which you predict the over/under on how many goals will be scored in a match. For context, 50% of all League One matches in 2023/24 produced over 2.5 goals, while 74% saw more than 1.5 goals scored. However, only 12% of L1 games produced over 3.5 goals last season.
ACCA
An ‘acca’ or accumulator bet combines multiple selections in a single wager. The odds of each line are then multiplied together to create a single, extended price, and each pick will have to win for the wager to pay out. For example, you can back Stockport, Bolton, Lincoln and Crawley to win in the next G1 gameweek at 18.22 in a Myriad Play acca.
Half Time/Full Time (HT/FT)
You can also place League One bets on half-time and full-time outcomes. These include picking the winning teams in each half. You can engage in correct score betting during the first half too, with 1-0 and 0-1 accounting for 40.2% of all half-time scores in the 2023/24 campaign.
League One Competition Format
A total of 24 teams will compete in the 2024/25 League One season. Each one will play the other 23 sides twice during the campaign, once at home and then on the road.
Every L1 team will participate in 46 matches, while a total of 552 League One games will be played during the regular season. Clubs will earn three points per win and leave empty-handed after a defeat, while tied games will see each team claim a single point.
L1 adopts a classic league format, and the two sides that accumulate the most points at the end of the season will earn automatic promotion to the Championship. The four teams with the fewest points will be relegated to League Two.
Clubs that finish between 3rd and 6th will enter the playoffs. This knockout competition features a pair of two-legged semi-finals and a showpiece final at Wembley, and the eventual winner will also advance the Championship.
League One 2023/24 Season Standings Recap
Last season saw plenty of drama in League One, although Portsmouth dominated at the top of the table. In fact, they earned 2.11 points per game and ultimately topped League 1 with 97 points, while Derby earned the second automatic promotion spot with 92 points.
Bolton missed out on promotion by just five points, despite outsourcing the top two and scoring at a rate of 1.86 per game. Although they subsequently reached the playoff final, they were upset at Wembley by Oxford United, who had finished fifth during the regular season and 10 points behind the Trotters.
At the other end of the table, Carlisle United finished bottom and 11 points behind their nearest rivals. They also had the worst defensive record in the league, conceding 81 goals in 46 matches at a rate of 1.76 per 90 minutes. They only kept clean sheets in 7% of their matches too, and the Cumbrians were arguably the campaign’s biggest underachievers.
The League’s great entertainers in 2023/24 were Barnsley. The Tykes scored 82 goals and conceded 64 in their 46 matches, which saw an average of 3.23 per 90 overall. It’s also interesting to note that Burton and Shrewsbury (who finished two and four points clear of the relegation zone last season) are now mired in the bottom two and have just two wins in 26 matches between them in 2024/25.
In terms of individual performances, Alfie May scored in 2023/24 with 23 goals for Charlton Athletic. He was a constant threat throughout the campaign and had the most shots per game (3.74) of any player in the league. He has since moved to current league leaders Birmingham, scoring five times from his 10 shots or target so far.
Past League One Winners
As with all sports betting guides of this type, we’re going to take a closer look at the most recent League One winners and their performance. Interestingly, two of the previous eight L1 champions have amassed 100 or more points, while only one of these title winners currently plays in the third tier (Wigan Athletic).
Season | Winner | Runner-up | Points Total |
---|---|---|---|
2023/24 | Portsmouth | Derby County | 97 Points |
2022/23 | Plymouth Argyle | Ipswich Town | 101 Points |
2021/22 | Wigan Athletic | Rotherham United | 92 Points |
