England, who were one of the favourites ahead of Euro 2024 starting, stumbled their way to the top of Group C, earning themselves a Round of 16 clash against Slovakia. England fans will take that as there was a chance that they could be pitted against the Dutch, who finished third in Group D. With the way England have been playing, Slovakia fans will also probably be quite content with the draw. Who will come out on top and book themselves a Quarter-Final clash with either Italy or Switzerland? Find out all of my views below.
🏆 England vs Slovakia Prediction
Everyone would have expected England to breeze through their group, but they made hard work of it with some very poor performances. They were pretty good for the first 30 minutes against Serbia, but things have gone downhill since then. Yes, they topped the group, but they are now playing boring football that makes watching paint dry look fun. The man to blame for this is Gareth Southgate as he is too cautious with his team selection and tactics - he has some of the best attacking players in the competition, but he would rather play three right-backs.
Slovakia have shown that they are no mugs as they managed to beat Belgium in their opening game of the tournament, but a 2-1 defeat to Ukraine shows that they have their flaws. They drew 1-1 with Romania too, but I do not think that much can be read into this as both teams knew that a draw would most likely see both sides through. They will be the big underdogs against England, so they can play this match with a lot less pressure on their shoulders.
England should win this match, but I have not been convinced by their performances as of late. Despite this, I am going to be patriotic and back England to come out on top. It will not be pretty, but I am going to go for a 1-0 win.
My Prediction: 🏆 England 1 Slovakia 0 ⚽

🏅 England vs Slovakia: Match Winner Odds
England and Slovakia have played against each other six times, with the Three Lions having won five of them - the other match ended in a 0-0 draw. However, these previous results cannot really be used as a gauge for what might happen this time around since it has been seven years since they last played.
Despite England's lacklustre performances in the Group Stage, the bookmakers have England as the big favourites to win this match. You can check out the match winner odds in the table below:

✔️ England vs Slovakia Betting Tips
This betting guide will now move on from England vs Slovakia odds and will focus on some top England vs Slovakia betting tips. Obviously, you are not obliged to agree with anything I say, but it is always wise to check out the views of others before you dive in and put down any bets.
If you have a free bet, you might be tempted to just slap it down and hope for the best as you will not lose real money, but it is wise to try and take full advantage of such promotions. The more knowledge you gain, the easier it will be to do this.
- Tip 1: Bet on England to win: England have not shown anywhere near the quality that we all know they have, but at least they have not been losing matches. They might be boring to watch at the moment, but they were never really at risk of losing any of their group games. Slovakia are no better than the teams that England have already faced. It will probably be another dour performance unless Southgate makes changes to his starting XI, but England's quality should see them scrape through to the last eight. If Southgate plays Mainoo, Gordon, and Palmer from the start, they would probably comfortably win, but he will not. If you want to back an England win, then BetUK Sports are offering odds of 1.40.
- Tip 2: Bet on both teams not to score: England have only conceded two goals from nine shots on target so far in this competition, which shows us that their defence is at least doing its job. Slovakia, like England's group opponents, will sit all men behind the ball and look to break on the counter. However, I would back England's defenders to deal with any breakaways that come their way as Stones and Guehi are forming a good partnership. Those who also do not think both teams will score can find odds of 1.54 at BetUK Sports.
- Tip 3: Bet on Kane to score: Harry Kane has been a shadow of himself in the last three matches, and he drops too deep for my liking. He does not have the pace to outrun defenders, so he should concentrate on getting in the box when England are attacking. He got a lucky goal against the Danes as the ball fell kindly to him and, if he stays in the box, I can see something similar happening against a tightly packed Slovakian team. If you want to back Kane to score, then Leovegas Sports are offering odds of 2.33.
- Tip 4: Bet on a 1-0 England win: If you are expecting a flair performance from England, you will be sorely upset. Southgate, one of the most boring managers in world football, does not do flair. He will be ecstatic with a boring 1-0 win and tell us all how he has made England fun again. I see a boring 1-0 against a limited Slovakia side, and Betiton Sport are offering odds of 4.92 for this outcome.
N.B. Please always make sure that you gamble responsibly. Set a budget and stick to it. Stop when the fun stops.
1️⃣England Update
There were high hopes for England ahead of this competition, but it is safe to say that a lot of that optimism has turned into pessimism. The three worst matches in the tournament have all involved England, and this is because Southgate is too negative as a manager. The fact that he put on Anthony Gordon in the 89th minute against Slovenia says it all really. Cole Palmer is one of our best youngsters, yet he has only played 20 minutes across three group matches. I hope that he is bolder in his team selection for this Round of 16 clash, but we all know he will go for the same uninspiring line-up.
I hope Palmer gets a start because he deserves it after having a brilliant season with Chelsea - he was involved in 42 goals in 48 appearances for the Blues. Whenever he gets the ball, fans expect something to happen because he is always looking to take on his man and beat him. Bellingham gets a lot of praise, but I rate Palmer higher. Below are England's last five results:

Phil Foden returned to England for the birth of his third child, but Southgate expects to have him back in time for Sunday's match.
2️⃣Slovakia Update
Slovakia is not a team which is full of household names, but they all know what job they are supposed to be doing which makes them a tricky team to beat and overcome. Normally, it is fair to say that they would not fancy their chances against England, having never beaten them before, but their confidence will be higher after having seen how the Three Lions performed in the Group Stage. Furthermore, they can draw confidence from their 1-0 win over Belgium.
The main man for Slovakia is Stanislav Lobotka as he runs the show for them in the engine room. The Napoli man knows how to pick a pass and start dangerous attacks but he also can defend stoically when needed. England's Declan Rice will be tasked with keeping him quiet. Below are Slovakia's previous five results:
Last 5 Matches | |
---|---|
Slovakia1 Romania1 | 26.06.24 UEFA EURO 2024 |
Slovakia1 Ukraine2 | 21.06.24 UEFA EURO 2024 |

Francesco Calzona has no injury issues or suspensions that he needs to contend with when picking his starting XI for this match against England.
