Germany, as the hosts of Euro 2024, played in the opening match of the tournament and they would not have expected such an easy game. If they manage to beat Hungary on the 19th of June at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart, then they will have all but sealed their place in the Round of 16. Germany took on Scotland in the opening match of the competition, and not even the most optimistic Germans would have predicted such an easy match. Florian Wirtz opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and from then on in it was a bit of a procession. Kai Havertz scored from the spot just before the break to make it game, set, and match for the hosts. Come the end of the match, Germany had ten shots on target to Scotland's 0 - their goal was an own goal from Antonio Rudiger. This really was a statement performance from the Germans.
After the German demolition, Scotland would have been hoping for a draw between Switzerland and Hungary, but it was not to be. Hungary, for the most part, were largely disappointing and ended up suffering a 3-1 defeat. They were 2-0 down at half-time after some poor defending, but they did make things trickier for their opponents in the second half. However, if they are to get any points off a rampant German side, they are going to have to perform much better.
