portugal-vs-france-euro-2024-prediction

The second quarter-final of Euro 2024 will see Portugal take on France for the right to play against either Germany or Spain in the semi-final. This match will occur at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg on the 5th of July with a scheduled kick-off time of 20:00 GMT. Neither of these two nations have been playing great football in this tournament, but this should still be a match with plenty of drama and excitement. But who will go on and take one step closer to glory? Read on and all my predictions for this match will be quickly revealed.

🏆 Portugal vs France Prediction

Portugal started their campaign with a 2-1 win over Czechia and a 3-0 win over Turkiye and things were looking rosy enough in the Portuguese camp. However, they then lost their third game against Georgia, but many thought this was just a blip as they had already topped the group and made plenty of changes for that match. However, they were lucky to get through to the last eight as their performance against Slovenia was nowhere near good enough. If Sesko did not fluff his lines when one-on-one in extra-time with the score at 0-0, they would be going home right now, and Ronaldo would still be blubbering like a baby.

France, alongside England, were one of the main favourites to win this competition a few weeks back, but they have been just as underwhelming as the English. In fact, from the four matches that they have played, they are yet to score a goal from open play - they have scored a penalty and been the beneficiaries of two own goals. With the attacking talent that they have at their disposal, this is nowhere good enough, but you would expect them to get into their groove at some point in the competition.

This will be another close match that could go either way based on how both teams are playing at the moment. However, I rate the France team as being slightly better than the Portuguese team, so I am going to back Les Bleus to come out on top 1-0 in this match after 90 minutes.

My Prediction: 🏆 Portugal 0 France 1 ⚽

🏅 Portugal vs France: Match Winner Odds

Portugal and France have faced off against each other a total of 28 times in their footballing history with Portugal having won six times to France's 19. There has only been a total of three draws between these two nations, with one of those coming the last time that they met in 2021 - also at the European Championship. Ronaldo scored two penalties for Portugal that day, so there were no tears in the making.

With France having a better squad than Portugal and having had the best of their head-to-heads over the years, it is not surprising that the bookmakers have them down as the favourites to go on and win this match. You can check out the latest match winner odds in the following table:

⚽ Portugal vs France: Both Teams To Score Odds

My recommended bookies do not believe that both teams will score in this match. From the odds that are on offer, we can deduce that they believe that France will win this game to nil. With the way that Portugal played against Slovenia, this is quite the possibility. Take a look at the both teams to score odds in the following table:

🥅 Portugal vs France: Over/Under Goals Odds

Since the bookies do not believe that both teams will find the back of the net in this game, it is not much of a shock to see that they are backing against there being over 2.5 goals scored in this match. They think France will win without conceding, but it would be a big surprise if they were to win 3-0. Those who like to bet on this market can find all of the latest competitive odds below:

✔️ Portugal vs France Betting Tips

Now that you know some quality Portugal vs France odds that are floating around for this match, let's get into some of my top Portugal vs France betting tips.

Even those who plan on using free bets for this game should still take the time to check out what some top tipsters are thinking ahead of kick-off. The greater your knowledge, the more chance you will have of placing a successful bet. Using a free bet promotion as an excuse to put down a bet with high returns but little chance of actually winning is a bit of a waste in my view.

  • Tip 1: Bet on France to win: France are yet to hit their stride yet and are probably getting a barrage of abuse from their fans and media, but we all know that there is a quality team in there just waiting to pounce. I liked the look of Portugal in their first two matches, but they have rapidly gone downhill since then. I think one of their main issues is that Ronaldo is trying to make everything about him - he insists on taking free kicks, for example, despite the fact he has scored just once from 60 at international competitions. France seem more of a team, which is why I am backing them. Those who agree can find odds of 2.40 at BetUK Sport.
  • Tip 2: Bet on both teams not to score: France have not been playing the kind of attacking football that we have come to expect, but they have been pretty solid at the back. In the four matches that they have played, they have just conceded the one goal, which was a penalty against Poland. Portugal have now been kept out by Georgia and Slovenia, which will be a worry for their fans. I can see France keeping a clean sheet here, and Mr Mega Sports are offering odds of 1.73 at present for this outcome.
  • Tip 3: Back Kylian Mbappe to score: Mbappe would have been looking to give Real Madrid fans a glimpse of what they will be getting next season, but so far he has put in a string of underwhelming performances. In three matches, he has just one goal to his name which was from the penalty spot. However, I do not expect him to stay quiet for the whole competition and I can see him notching the winner in this match. If you agree with this, then LeoVegas Sports are currently offering odds of 3.55 for him to score.
  • Tip 4: Bet on a slender 1-0 win for France: I do not see this being a goal-fest as neither team will want to make a mistake that could end up eliminating them from the competition. France have defended well this tournament and have a scary attacking force, so I can see them getting over the line and booking a semi-final spot with a one-goal win. Those who agree can find odds of 5.95 at Betiton Sport.

n.b. Always remember how important it is to gamble responsibly. Set yourself a budget and do not stray from it. Never chase your losses as this usually just leads you down a more slippery financial slope.

1️⃣Portugal Update

Portugal have talented players all over the pitch, but they seem to have gone off the boil a little bit in their last two games. Cristiano Ronaldo is always on the lookout for his next little bit of glory which is something that surely has a negative impact on how they play. The fact that he is still taking free kicks even though he rarely ever scores from them must wind the Portuguese fans up something silly. If he was more about the team against Slovenia and less about himself, then they probably would have not needed a penalty shootout to keep their European dreams alive.

The main man to watch for Portugal in my opinion is Vitinha because he is technically gifted and highly creative. His ball control and dribbling skills make him a nightmare for defenders to deal with, while he also knows how to chip in with a goal every now and then. For me, he was one of the best players on the pitch against Slovenia in their Round of 16 tie, so it was surprising to see him taken off with 25 minutes left to play. Roberto Martínez currently has a full squad of players that he can pick his starting XI for this big game with France.

2️⃣France Update

If France are to go on and make it to the final, they will have to up their game a lot because even if they end up winning this match against Portugal, Spain or Germany will make shrift work of them in the semi-final. Didier Deschamps needs to quickly find a way to get his attacking force firing because nobody would have expected them not to have scored a goal from open play after having played four matches. They are managing to have shots on goal, but they are just not being accurate enough - against Belgium, they had a total of 16 shots on goal, but only two of them managed to find the target. They are better than this, and they will be eager to show their true quality in this next match.

Marcus Thuram is the man who I am going to be paying close attention to in this match as he has been one of France's most underwhelming players so far. The Inter Milan forward scored a good number of goals at club level last season, but he just seems a little bit lost when it comes to the national team. He has just two goals in 22 matches for his country and is running the risk of being dropped. Below are France's previous five results:
