The Bahrain Grand Prix, also called the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix because of sponsorship reasons, is an F1 motor race that takes place -surprise, surprise - in Bahrain. Compared to some of the other races, this is a much newer event, with the first race at the Bahrain International Circuit having taken place on the 4th of April 2004. It was a historic moment in the F1 world as it was the first Grand Prix to take place in the Middle East.
This race used to be the third one in the F1 calendar, but in 2006 it was the swapped with the Australia Grand Prix. It was also the first race in 2010 and 2021 and is scheduled to be the first race in 2022.
Aside from being an exciting motorsport competition in itself, the race also provides plenty of opportunities to place a bet. Below, we give you everything you need to know if you fancy having a go at betting on this race.

History of the Bahrain Grand Prix
The construction of the Bahrain International Circuit, which is in Sakhir, started back in 2002 with a lot of domestic interest since it paved the way for the next generation of racers from Bahrain. The island nation had to fight off stiff competition from the likes of Lebanon, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates as they all wanted the prestige of hosting F1 Grand Prix racing.
The first race took place in 2004, and it was won by Michael Schumacher, who was racing for Ferrari. Fernando Alonso was the winner of the second Grand Prix in Bahrain in 2005 and he won it once again the following year, after a hard-fought battle with Schumacher. In 2007 and 2008, Felipe Massa, a Brazilian driver, won the race with Ferrari. In 2009, it was the turn of Jenson Button to win the race, and then Alonso became the first Formula 1 driver to win the race three times in 2010.
For the 2010 race, a new circuit configuration came into being. It makes use of the "Endurance Circuit" layout, which extends the length of a lap to 3.9 miles. After turn four, the track turns left, and then there are five turns before the drivers head back around to the original circuit. Then the drivers have to navigate a left-right kink before there is a tight hairpin that returns the drivers to the main track.
In 2011, the Bahrain Grand Prix that was scheduled to be raced on the 13th of March was cancelled because of Bahraini protests. The race was rescheduled for later on in the year, but it was then decided that it would just be cancelled for that year. In 2012, human rights activists wanted the Bahrain Grand Prix cancelled again because of excessive force and torture used by the government - an activist by the name of Salah Abbas Habib was shot dead the eve before the Grand Prix. However, it eventually went ahead despite the safety concerns.
Due to the current pandemic, the organisers of the Bahrain Grand Prix declared that no spectators would be allowed to attend the race scheduled to take part on the 22nd of March 2020. However, just two weeks before the race, it was postponed until the 29th of November. The race received a lot of backlash from human rights organizations, as well as seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton. The protests occured due to demands that the F1 had responsibilities to deal with human rights issues in countries that host races. The race still went ahead though, and it was won by Hamilton.
Why the Bahrain Grand Prix Is a Must Watch
While the majority of races in the Grand Prix calendar are afternoon races, the Bahrain Grand Prix is a night race. This is because many Bahrainis work on a Sunday, so by having the race at a later time, it gives them the opportunity to finish work, get cleaned up, and head to the track.
The Bahrain Grand Prix is one of the most anticipated races in the season because it is one of the trickiest circuits, leading to plenty of drama. Below we are going to take a closer look at the circuit.
About The Circuit of the Bahrain Grand Prix
- Turn 1: This turn was named after Michael Schumacher, who helped to design this circuit. Over the years, it has been the scene for many intense crashes, and one shocking one in 2014 that saw Esteban Gutierrez get turned over by Pastor Maldonado.
- Turns 2 and 3: It is important to get a good exit out of the first turn as this sets the driver up nicely for turns 2 and 3, which are more kinks than they are corners. These turns are taken flat out and then have a short straight that allows drivers to slipstream the car in front for a bit of an advantage.
- Turn 4: Going into Turn 4 is all about speed and drivers have one of the best chances to overtake here. However, a brake failure heading into this turn can be quite frightening as Max Verstappen happened to find out a few seasons ago.
- Turns 5, 6, and 7: The second section of this 5.4km lap starts with the flowing and fast turns that are Turns 5, 6, and 7. Combined, they form a high-speed "S" that goes into Turn 8. It is important to have good stability and aerodynamics at this stage of the circuit.
- Turn 8: This right-hand hairpin provides a really nasty surprise for the drivers because taking the shortest route will mean that they have to deal with the bump that is on the apex. Therefore, many prefer a wide line, but those who are willing to navigate the bump could get high reward for their bravery.
- Turns 9 and 10: Despite the fact that they are coming off of a short straight, drivers can hit speeds of more than 200kph as they had towards this turn, a bend that takes them to Turn 10 - this is very close to a hairpin, but it is not technically one. This is a vital part of the race where time can be made up or lost.
- Turns 11 and 12: These two turns, 11 is a left through turn and 12 is a right through turn, combine to create a fast sequence that leads into Turn 13 - brakes have to be applied here, but the less the better.
- Turn 13: After going flat out through Turn 12, the drivers carry on with their speed as they approach 13, which is a right-handed hairpin. They have to brake suddenly here, so they need to avoid locking their front tyres, but then they need to pick up speed quickly again as Turn 13 leads into the second longest straight on the circuit.
- Turn 15 and 15: At the end of the lap, the drivers will find the final two corners of the Bahrain track. There is a double right-handed kink that puts the drivers back into the pit straight and a race towards the chequered flag.
Who Were the Previous Winners of the Bahrain Grand Prix?
Above we mentioned some of the previous Bahrain Grand Prix winners, but we want to give you a complete breakdown of the Bahrain Grand Prix results down the years because we feel that this is information that can come in handy when you are placing bets on this event. Drivers that are still on the circuit and have won a particular race before will have a very good chance of winning it once again because they have vital experience under their belts and know the track really well.
Year | Driver | Manufacturer |
---|---|---|
2004 | Michael Schumacher | Ferrari |
2005 | Fernando Alonso | Renault |
2006 | Fernando Alonso | Renault |
2007 | Felipe Massa | Ferrari |
2008 | Felipe Massa | Ferrari |
2009 | Jenson Button | Brawn-Mercedes |
2010 | Fernando Alonso | Ferrari |

2016 | Nico Rosberg | Mercedes |
2017 | Sebastian Vettel | Ferrari |
2018 | Sebastian Vettel | Ferrari |
2019 | Lewis Hamilton | Mercedes |
2020 | Lewis Hamilton | Mercedes |
2021 | Lewis Hamilton | Mercedes |
So, as you can see from the table above, Lewis Hamilton is the most successful driver at the Bahrain Grand Prix. When it comes to betting on the Bahrain Grand Prix 2022, it is probably a wise move to put your money on Hamilton making it four wins in a row. There is just nobody that can keep up with him at the moment.
Out of the other winners from the table above, only Vettel and Alonso are still competing. The odds on a Hamilton win at the 2022 Grand Prix will probably be quite low, like they are in every race due to his dominance in recent years, so if you want to take a risk and chase the odds, then we would recommend that you go for one of Alonso or Vettel.

What Are Popular Markets for 2022 Grand Prix Betting?
When it comes to betting on the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, or any other major F1 race for the matter, there are plenty of markets that you can put your money on, and this is what we are going to look at right now.
- F1 Drivers Championship: The Driver's Championship is the most prestigious F1 award, and this is given to the driver that wins the most points over the season. As the season wears on, the odds will start to decrease and favour one driver above the rest, so it is best to place your bets as early as possible.
- F1 Constructors' Championship: The Constructor's Championship is the second biggest prize in F1. Since each constructor has two cars in a race, the team that has the best accumulative core at the end of the season wins this award.
- Race winner: This is one of the most popular markets in Formula 1. You should bet on the driver that you think will win before the race has started as the odds will be higher than they are during the live race.
- Podium finish: The odds for a podium finish will not usually be as high as those for the race winner, but it is often a safer bet. You will win your bet so long as your selected driver finishes the race in the top three.
- Lap 1 leader: Any true Formula 1 fan knows that the first lap is often prone to surprises and accidents, so there is often value in backing the underdog here. Even if your chosen driver goes on to finish last in the race, it does not matter so long as he was winning after lap 1.
- Pole position: Every Saturday before the main race, drivers do a single lap of the track in order to determine where they will be on the starting grid - the faster their lap, the better their position. You can put money on the driver that you think will be the fastest and earn pole position.
- Fastest lap: F1 is full of fun things to bet on, and fastest lap is one of them. Any driver can win the fastest lap and still not win or finish the race.
- Safety car: You can also put money on whether you think a safety car will appear or not.
What Are the Best Sportsbook Bonuses for Betting on the Bahrain Grand Prix?
Earlier we told you that sports betting sites will offer their punters bonuses that they can use on big F1 races such as the Bahrain Grand Prix. This is great as it means that you can place some wagers without having to risk any of your own money. The world of online gambling is really competitive, and this is the reason why bookmakers are forced into offering their players attractive bonuses and promos when they open an account. When a new customer registers with a bookie, they will want them to hang around for a long time, and the best way to make sure that this is what happens is to offer various bonuses and promos.
However, not all bonuses are created equally, so we have opted to help you out a bit by doing some of our own research and locating bookies that are offering the best bonuses at this current moment. Bookies have to constantly update the bonuses and promos that they have on offer to try and stay that one step ahead of their rivals, so there is a good chance that the following bonuses have changed now. We do try to stay up to date, but sometimes it is impossible with how many times they change.
- TonyBet: If you feel that TonyBet is the bookie that you want to register with, then they are offering a £50 bonus to all new players. You can use this money on any sporting event, but we highly suggest that you use it to bet on the Bahrain Grand Prix.
- Unibet: If you sign up with Unibet, then they have a risk-free Welcome Bonus that you can take full advantage of - simply place a bet up to £40, and if it goes on to be a losing one, you will receive your stake back in the form of a free bet. Once again, we recommend that you use this free bet on Formula 1. If you like to play casino games as well, then you will be glad to hear that they will throw in a £10 casino bonus too.
- 10bet: If you open an account with 10bet, then there is a £50 Welcome Bonus on offer. As usual, you can use this bonus money on whatever you like, but if you sign up around the time of the Bahrain Grand Prix, you should use the money on that event.
n.b. Whenever you are using bonuses and promotions, there is something that you should always do before you go ahead and start making bets, and this is read the various T&Cs that apply. All bonuses and promos have T&Cs attached to them, and by taking some time to familiarising yourself with them, you will be helping yourself out because you will learn about the wagering requirements, the number of days that you have to complete them by, and whether there are certain payment options that do not allow you to claim the welcome offer.
Where Can I Find the Best Bahrain Grand Prix Betting Odds?
Odds are always changing because sportsbooks know that if they offer betting odds than what their rivals are offering, then they will have a much better chance of standing out from the crowd and attracting some new customers. We all love a bargain, it is in our nature, so when it comes down to sports betting, you should always do a bit of research so that you can find the bookies that are offering their customers the best odds. Formula 1 drivers earn a lot of money, and you can ensure that you make the biggest profit possible by making use of the best odds.
To prove how important odds are, we are going to give you a brief example. Let us say that the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix weekend is here, and one bookie has Lewis Hamilton to win at odds of 1.70, while another bookie has him at odds of 1.90 to go on to win. If you stick a tenner on him to win with the first bookmaker and he does, then you will get a profit of £7. On the other hand, if you place a tenner on him to win with the second bookie and he does, then you will walk away with a profit of £9. Now, as a one off, losing out on £2 is no big deal, but if you lose £2 with every winning bet you make, it will quickly add up.
So, what sports betting sites offer the best odds for betting on Formula 1 races such as the Bahrain Grand Prix? Well, when it comes down to great F1 gambling odds, we recommend the following:
- Unibet
- Bwin
- Ladbrokes
Is There Formula 1 Live Betting?
Sportsbooks transitioned to the Internet in the 90s, and this was a fantastic move for us sports bettors because it allowed us to start placing bets on our favourite sport events without even having to leave our house. However, to start with, live betting was something that did not exist, meaning that if you wanted to bet on a Formula 1 race such as the Bahrain Grand Prix, then you had to do so before the race started.
Placing live bets is now something that many sports bettors like to do, which is why you will find it hard to come across a bookie that does not have their own live betting arena now. Bookmakers are now aware that if they do not have any live betting options, then they run the risk of losing out on customers. We are pretty sure that you will want to place some live Formula 1 bets at some stage, so below we have provided you with four bookies that we feel offer quality live gambling.
- Betfred
- William Hill
- NetBet
- Casumo
What Are the Best Bahrain Grand Prix Betting Tips?
You can start betting on Formula 1 right away if you like, but if you do so with little knowledge of the sport, then you will just end up losing more money than you win. We are here to help you out and want you to win as much money as you possibly can, which is why we are now going to give you some great tips that you should keep in mind whenever you are betting on Formula 1 races - these tips apply for all Formula 1 races, not just the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Driver Track Preferences
In cricket, a batsman will like playing on a particular wicket and will always play well when they get the chance to play on their favourite pitch and, in Formula 1, there are drivers that will have preferred tracks. Some drivers will perform very well on particular tracks, while struggling on others, so it is your job to do the research so that you are aware as to the type of tracks that the driver you are thinking about putting money on performs well on.
Know the Engines
Every F1 car will perform differently according to the circumstance. Just like a driver can perform differently on tracks, cars can also perform differently. You should find out about the car's performance on bends, straight tracks, and wet or dry tracks. This can be tricky at the start of the season since constructors often come up with new updates each season, but come the middle of the campaign, you should have more than enough data available to help you out.
Read Pre-race News
There are plenty of great sites out there that offer their readers race previews that have been written by racing experts that know all there is to know about the sport. Race news is very important, and the more you can find out the better it will be for you. Even the private life of a driver can have an influence on the outcome of a race, so try to find out as much information as you can.
Check the Weather Conditions
The weather has often had an impact on the outcome of Grand Prix races - unexpected rainfall down the years has caused some of the biggest and most dramatic incidents in the history of the sport. For example, back in 1998, the Belgian Grand Prix saw a huge downpour that created havoc and lead to the very first win for the Jordan team. Obviously, it does not need to be as dramatic as this because even a little bit of rain can impact the outcome of a race, while temperature and humidity can impact vehicle performance.
Pay Attention to Qualifying Laps
The starting grid position is very important in every race because the further away from pole position that a driver is, the more cars they will have to overtake to try and get on the podium. On tracks such as the Canadian Grand Prix, there are plenty of chances to overtake, but on tracks such as the Monaco one, it is practically impossible to overtake. Watching the qualifying race will give you a very good idea as to how a driver and vehicle will perform the next day.
Conclusion: Should You Bet on the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix?
When it comes to betting on the Formula 1, there are many different races that you can bet on, but we recommend that you at least place some sort of wager on the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix. Why do we recommend this? Well, it is one of the most entertaining races on the circuit, and there is nothing quite like starting off the new Formula 1 season with a nice profit under your belt. We really believe that all of the information that we have provided you with in this guide will be of great help when it comes to betting on Formula 1 races such as the Bahrain Grand Prix.
