🏎️ Belgian Grand Prix - A Circuit Overview

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps emerged from the debris of the First World War, opening in Stavelot back in August 1921. The track’s inaugural race was initially scheduled for that very same month, but was abruptly cancelled after only one driver entered. So, the track didn’t host a car race until 1922, when the iconic ’24 Hours of Francorchamps’ made its debut.

The track has undergone numerous configurations since its initial construction, the latest of which took place in 2022. One modification was focused on adding an extra run-off to the Eau Rouge/Raidillon part of the course, following a number of collisions and the fatal accident of F2 driver Anthoine Hubert in 2019.

Over time, the track length has halved from 14.9 kilometers, leaving 20 challenging turns, and elongated Kemmel Straight (which covers 1.05 km) and significant gradients. Interestingly, the Spa-Francorchamps also has the greatest difference between its highest and lowest elevation points (102.2 metres).

Verstappen’s foul-mouthed tirade against his teammates during the Hungarian Grand Prix highlighted his growing frustration, as he’s now embarked on his longest winless streak since 2022. However, he retains abundant driving skill and the fastest F1 car, so it’s likely that he’ll return to winning ways sooner rather than later.

But will the Dutchman’s fortunes improve at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps? Certainly, he has excelled there in recent times, winning three times consecutively and defeating teammate Sergio Perez by a staggering +17.841 seconds in 2022. He also finished +6.677 seconds ahead of Oscar Piastri last year, and clearly thrives on one of the sport’s fastest tracks.
