If you’re a fan of Royal Ascot betting, it’s likely that you’ll wager on the outcome of the 2024 Gold Cup. This remains the jewel in the Royal Ascot crown, with 16 runners scheduled to compete over a two-mile, three-furlong course on Thursday, 20th June.
This G1 race is once again open to runners aged four and over, with Aidan O’Brien’s Kyprios emerging as the ante post favourite among the UK’s best betting sites. However, he’ll face a significant challenge from Gregory and the unfancied Trawlerman at Ascot, while prominent racers who start well tend to fare better at the course.
🏆 Royal Ascot Gold Cup Prediction
The six-year-old Kyprios can more than justify his status as the Gold Cup favourite, having won eight of his previous 10 flat races since May 2021. He also placed second in the other two races, while his career record of 10 victories in 14 outings highlights his incredible consistency.
Of course, he also won the 2022 iteration of the Gold Cup at Ascot, defeating Mojo Star by half-a-length after a thrilling finale. He has prevailed in both races that he has contested over two miles and three furlongs, and while just two of the previous 10 Gold Cup winners have been aged six or older, I expect Kyprios to have too much for the remainder of the field in 2024.
My Prediction: 🏇 Kyprios to Win!
🏇 Royal Ascot Gold Cup Betting Preview
I’ve already touched on some of the main contenders at this year’s 2024 Ascot Gold Cup. But let’s take a closer look at the most likely winners and the very latest horse racing betting odds!
1️⃣ Kyprios
Kyprios has recorded four G1 victories in total during his career (including the Gold Cup two years ago). He was also highly competitive in last year’s Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot, where he was only defeated by a neck after a superb showing by Gold Cup rival Trawlerman (we’ll have a little more on him a little later).
Kyprios has also won both of his races in 2024 to date, including the SBK Vintage Crop Stakes Listed Race at Navan on 27th April. He defeated Queenstown by a length at Leopardstown last time out, with a rapid start enabling him to ride prominently from the outset. If he sets a similar pace in the Gold Cup, Kyprios will be hard to stop.
2️⃣ Gregory
Gregory is currently the second favourite to win the 2024 Ascot Gold Cup, at an average price of 6.00. This four-year-old colt, who has emerged from the stellar stable of John & Thady Gosden, has earned a top three finish in five of his six career outings to date, including his most recent appearance in the G2 Boodles Yorkshire Cup Stakes at York.
However, he has never raced over two miles before, while his last victory came in the G2 Queen's Vase back on June 23rd (although this was achieved during the 2023 Royal Ascot festival). This relative lack of form may cost Gregory in a competitive field, although he does offer value as an each-way pick.
3️⃣ Trawlerman
At the other end of the form spectrum is the 13.00 shot Trawlerman, who has also been trained by John & Thady Gosden. Although this six-year-old gelding is not among the ante post favourites at the time of writing, he has won three of his previous four career flat races.
This sequence included a slender victory in the aforementioned British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot in 2023, when he defeated edged out Kyprios by a neck. He has previous raced and won over two miles too, so he also offers exceptional value here at least as an each-way bet!
⭐ Royal Ascot Gold Cup Betting Tips
Before you go ahead and pick your 2024 Ascot Gold Cup winner, here are some expert betting tips and insights to keep in mind!
- Favourites Do Well in the Gold Cup The Gold Cup trend factor that has produced the most winners since 2004 is when runners were placed first in the betting market. In fact, the betting favourite has prevailed in 12 of the previous 20 race renewals, which is noticeably higher than similar G1 events and clearly favours Kyprios.
- Younger Horses are More Likely to Win I’ve already touched on how just two of the last 10 Gold Cup winners have been aged six or older. No six-year-old has triumphed since Yeats in 2009 either, while seven victors have been aged four. This trend would favour the 6.00 shot Gregory and Aidan O’Brien’s Tower Of London.
- Favour Aidan O’Brien Runners Aidan O’Brien has enjoyed stellar success in the Ascot Gold Cup, recording eight wins and 11 placed finishes in 24 attempts since 2004. His most successful runners include four-time winner Yeats and previous victor Kyprios, while Point Lonsdale and Continuous are other O’Brien runners in 2024.
