Why Lee Carsley is a sensible choice as England’s interim head coach
11/09/2024 09:26:48After Gareth Southgate’s departure post defeat in the Euro 24 Final, England have a new men’s international manager. Well, sort of. They have appointed an interim manager for the upcoming Nations League games, and that man is Lee Carsley.
Carsley is a solid and sensible choice as interim head coach. He is known to the FA hierarchy, having been part of the England coaching set up at different levels for a few years, he is already familiar with several of the young players that are coming through into the senior international team having been their manager at underage level.
"With Carsley in charge, the team achieved even more than was probably anticipated originally, as he led England to the European U-21 Championships title in 2023."
Finally, he is somebody who is viewed as the kind of progressive, forward-thinking and attacking coach that the FA want to employ as the next England Head Coach, whether that turns out to be Carsley on a full-time basis or somebody else.
Who Is Lee Carsley?
The 50-year-old former Republic of Ireland international played for Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, and Coventry City before joining Everton in 2002. At the Goodison Park club, he became known for his midfield partnership with Thomas Gravesen under then-manager David Moyes. He finished his playing career with spells at Birmingham City and Coventry City, and it was at Coventry that his coaching career began.
Over the next few years, he worked in various Youth Coach roles at clubs like Brentford, Birmingham City and Manchester City, with his time at Birmingham and Brentford including spells as Caretaker Manager.
He then joined the England setup at an underage level, working his way up to be the England U-20 Coach before the opportunity arose for him to take over as the England U-21 Head Coach. As the England U-21 boss, he was tasked with refining the style of the team within that age group and developing future senior England internationals.
With Carsley in charge, the team achieved even more than was probably anticipated originally, as he led England to the European U-21 Championships title in 2023. His performance and reputation led to him being the long-time favourite for the Republic of Ireland’s Head Coach job when they dispensed of Stephen Kenny, but he reportedly turned down the chance to manage the country for whom he played forty times, for one more cycle as England U-21 boss. Those plans have changed for the time being with this appointment, and whether he returns to the underage setup will presumably be determined by how well he does during his interim time in charge of the senior team.
How will England set-up under Carsley
In contrast to Carsley, the midfield destroyer as a player, Carsley, the manager, has a reputation for coaching his teams to play attractive, attacking football. At the European U-21 Championships last year, England were stacked full of technical players who were easy on the eye to fans and pundits alike. Players such as Harvey Elliot, Curtis Jones, Angel Gomes and Cole Palmer were all positioned by the coach to be as effective as possible in the final third, with Anthony Gordon also among that highly talented group that triumphed in Georgia.
Carsley showed innovation and adaptability during that Championship, using James Garner, a fine young midfielder who came through at Manchester United and is now plying his trade at Everton as a right back and Curtis Jones as one of his deep-lying central midfielders as opposed to further up the midfield where he had predominantly been used by Liverpool in the EPL up to last season.
What can Carsley expect as England manager
Carsley will, even as the interim England boss, be faced with the kind of media scrutiny he has never had to deal with during his football career. How he deals with that side of the job, as well as the obvious on-field matters, could go a long way in deciding whether he has a chance at the job in the long term.
He has in the past spoken about being happiest while out on the pitch working with his players but his time as interim England boss no matter how short lived it may be, will undoubtedly involve more than just coaching the players on the training pitch. How he copes with these responsibilities will be keenly watched, all with a view to his prospects at the job full-time.
Carsley will also have to get used to dealing with a higher profile of player in his new role compared to what he has done before. There is no reason to suggest he won’t be able to, but how he handles the big personalities and reputations of some of the senior England players will be a factor in how his interim spell goes.
Carsley will kick off his spell in charge of England with a Nations League game against the Republic of Ireland, which he played forty times for and reportedly turned down the opportunity to manage in Dublin on September 7th.
