World Darts Championship Preview
29/11/2024 15:55:44The biggest tournament to bet on in the darts calendar is only a couple of weeks away with the 2025 World Darts Championship kicking off on the 15th of December.
Last year saw an amazing run to the final by then 16-year-old sensation Luke Littler, who was eventually defeated by current world number 1 Luke Humphries, who picked up his first World title. It was an intriguing tournament with shocks such as Scott Williams defeating Michael Van Gerwen 5 sets to nil in the Quarter Final.
This year's iteration of the tournament promises to be better than ever. In the world of darts at the moment there are so many contenders for tournaments that it is hard to pick just one winner. Humphries and Littler will be the favourites but being on the same side of the draw they are on a collision course to meet in the semi-final, as opposed to the final as they did last year.
Here we will take a look at who I think will be the contenders for the 2025 World Darts Championships.
Luke Humphries
Luke Humphries has achieved so much since he won his first major title at the 2023 World Grand Prix. From that time, he has won the Grand Slam, the Players Championship twice (including last weekend), the World Matchplay and the aforementioned World Darts Championship.
He is the world number 1, and he is there on merit. “Cool Hand Luke” is just 29 years of age, so he has all the time to add to his already impressive list of accolades including adding another World title to his resume. Humphries will begin the defence of his title versus the winner of Thibault Tricole and Joe Comito.
Luke Littler
The teenage sensation continues to light up the world of darts, recently winning the Grand Slam of Darts, his first TV major ranking title. He also won the 2024 Premier League although that is not considered a ranking major.
He won the World Series of Darts and was most recently runner-up at the Players Championship losing to Luke Humphries. All this has led to a meteoric rise up the rankings as Littler enters this World Championship as 4th seed.
Littler would be my main pick for this tournament and it will be interesting to see if he meets Humphries in the semi-final.
"Littler begins his quest for the Sid Waddel trophy versus the winner of Ryan Meikle and Fallon Sherrock."
Gary Anderson
Gary Anderson has seen a career resurgence in 2024 that has seen him move from 27th ranked to 14th seed heading into the World Championships. Anderson has a tremendous record at the Alexandra Palace reaching the final on 5 occasions, winning twice.
His resurgence sees him go into this event as the bookmaker's third favourite, despite him not being ranked in the top 4 or even top 8 in the world, showing the form, he is in. He recently had an excellent run to the Grand Slam semi-final, losing out to Luke Littler 16 legs to 15 in an epic game.
Anderson is my sentimental favourite as he is my favourite player, so I hope he continues his excellent form and picks up his third-world title.
Other Contenders
Many top players have had difficult years, but they will always be contenders for the Darts World Championship. Gerwyn Price has dropped to 10th in the world following a string of poor performances, but the 2021 World Darts Champion has what it takes.
Michael Van Gerwen has not had his best year and recently went out in the group stage of the Grand Slam and fell at round 1 of the Players Championship. He is coming into the tournament in poor form but the 3-time world champion is always somebody who should be feared.
Other potential contenders for the crown include Nathan Aspinall, Michael Smith, Dave Chisnall, Rob Cross and Stephen Bunting, all players you wouldn’t be surprised to see lift the trophy come the 3rd of January.
This World Championships promises to be a memorable one with the tournament officially kicking off on the 15th of December.
