🏠 Overview of Italy
Italy, it is fair to say, have never had a really good rugby team and one of the main reasons for this is that it is not one of the most popular sports in the country - this is football, and its popularity is no surprise when you consider the success that they have had over the years. However, when it comes to rugby, they are improving all the time and they are now picking up some sizeable scalps. Throughout 2022, Italy took part in 11 matches and won 4 of them, which was more than Wales. Fans of other nations might have been calling for the manager's head, but Italy fans can see the improvement that is happening under Keiran Crowley.
In the 2022 6 Nations, Italy, like they have done in many previous additions, finished right at the bottom of the table and claimed the Wooden Spoon. Their first game of last year's tournament was against France at the Stade de France, with France coming out on top with a relatively comfortable 37-10 victory. They then played against England at Rome's Stadio Olimpico, and they did not do themselves any just as they failed to register a single point and fell to a 33-0 loss. Their third game was against Ireland in Dublin, and they conceded more than 50 points, and they then lost to the Scots in their fourth game. However, in their fifth match of the tournament, they put in a solid display away to Wales and won the game 22-21.
Last July, Italy were tasked with playing three matches against Romania, Portugal, and Georgia and they managed to claim two wins from these three matches. In the first game they took on Portugal and won 38-31, and then they beat Romania by a scoreline of 45-13. Their final game of the summer was against Georgia, but they put in a pretty weak performance and ended up losing the game 28-19. While they would have been hopeful of winning all three summer games, losing to Georgia, who turned Wales over, is not a big disgrace.
In their Autumn internationals they took on a lot harder opponents in the shape of Australia, Samoa, and South Africa, but they still picked up a few good results. The Samoans can be tricky, but the Italians nearly put 50 points on them. They then defeated the Aussies by one point, which was the first time that they had beaten Australia in their history. They did get destroyed by South Africa in their last game of 2022, but the Springboks are one of the best teams in the world.
We can never be too sure as to what Italy will turn up, but we hope it is the one that got the better of Wales and Australia because, in our view, the Six Nations is always a greater spectacle when all of the teams are playing at the top of their game. Many times the title has hung on the team that got the biggest win against Italy, but we do hope this is not the case in 2023.
⭐ Italy Star Players to Watch
Crowley, unlike some of his opposing managers, does not have a huge pool of players to select from, but he has been doing a good job with those that he does have at his disposal. This current crop of Italy players does have a number of talented players, and below are three that you need to keep an eye on during the 2023 Six Nations.
Player | Position | Caps | Points Scored | Star Qualities |
---|---|---|---|---|
Ange Capuozzo | Wing or Fullback | 7 | 25 | Good under the high ball, fleet of foot, and a killer finisher |
Michele Lamaro | Flanker | 21 | 0 | Really strong, great at the breakdown, and a top ball carrier |
Tommaso Allan | Flyhalf | 66 | 389 | Can dictate play, score penalties, and knows where the tryline is |
✈️ Overview of France
It is not an exaggeration on our part to say the France rugby team is one of the best that they have ever had. In 2022, they played 10 matches and did not lose any of them. Fabien Galthié has managed to get his players playing some very impressive rugby, and they will hope that their form carries on throughout 2023 as there is the Rugby World Cup in Paris later this year, and France will be looking to become just the second northern hemisphere team, after England, to lift the title.
Their first game of the 2022 6 Nations was against Italy, and they won with points to spare, although they were given a bit of a fright early on. They played Ireland in their second match, and many said that this was the title decider, which is what it was. The French put in a very good display and won a close match by six points, and they followed this up with wins against Scotland, Wales, and England. Since they won all five of their matches, they claimed the Grand Slam.
Last summer France flew over to Japan to play two matches against an improving Japanese team. The first match took place at the Toyota Stadium, and France ran in five tries to secure a 42-23 win. The second match at Tokyo's National Stadium was a closer one, and France edged out 20-15 winners.
Most other northern hemisphere teams played four games in the Autumn, but France only played three which were against Australia, Japan, and South Africa. Their first game was against Australia and it was one that was full of entertainment and drama - the French needed a late Damian Penaud try to secure a 30-29 win. Their second game against South Africa also had a lot of Drama, and the French came out 30-26 in yet another close game. Their final 2022 match was against Japan, and France picked up a comfortable win to finish the year unbeaten.
If France carry on playing at the same level that they played at in 2022, then it is difficult to look beyond them claiming another 6 Nations trophy. We would not be too surprised if they earned back-to-back Grand Slams.
⭐ France Star Players to Watch
Rugby is a very popular sport throughout France, so it is no surprise that they have developed top players over the years. Their current crop of players is full of talent, and below are three players to watch out for in the 2023 Six Nations.

---|---|---|---|---|
Gael Fickou | Centre | 74 | 60 | Very strong, top handling skills, and plenty of speed |
Damian Penaud | Winger | 37 | 107 | Great at evading tackles, fast, and an eye for a try |
Antoine Dupont | Scrumhalf | 42 | 60 | Can dictate play, very strong, and deceptively quick |
🥇 Who Will Win? Italy vs France Prediction
So, what would our advice be for this match between Italy and France at the Stadio Olimpico on the 5th of February? Well, regardless of the weather conditions, there should only be one winner in this game, and that is France. They have sheer quality all over the field and should have too much for the Italians to handle, even if they put in one of their best performances in recent years. Therefore, we do not expect Italy to shock France, and would back the French to win by at least 20 points.
Our match prediction: France to win.
