South Africa are the world champions so we do not need a reminder as to how good they can be on their day, while Portugal are a tier-two rugby nation. However, at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, they showed flashes of improvement and I was impressed by some of their play. They gave the Aussies a good run for their money, drew with Georgia, and picked up a win against the Fijians. Nobody will be expecting them to beat the World Champions, and below I am going to take a look at some main factors which could end up being key.
- History: There is no history to look at yet between these two nations because they have yet to play against each other. Everyone will be expecting the Springboks to strike first blood on the head-to-head record.
- World Rankings: South Africa are sitting at the top of the Rugby World Rankings with 94.86 points, while Portugal are sitting 15 places below them in 16th place. They are more than 20 points below their illustrious opponents. What these rankings tell us is that there is a big gap in quality between these two countries, so South Africa should pick up a very comfortable win.
- Home Advantage: This match will take place in Bloemfontein, so the majority of those in attendance will be backing South Africa to win. The Springboks will have home advantage, but I would back them to win this match wherever it was played in all honesty.

I would love Portugal to win as it would be great for the world of rugby, but I just cannot see how they can manage such a feat. South Africa are better all over the field, so Portugal will look to give a good account of themselves while keeping the score down. I can still see South Africa winning by around 35 points.
