Match prediction 31 of 48 of our Rugby World Cup 2023 betting series.
The Rugby World Cup 2023 enters its final month on Sunday, and Australia will be taking on Portugal in Pool C, with a scheduled kick-off time of 16:45 GMT. This game on the 1st of October will be played at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne.
The match will be officiated by Nika Amashukeli from Georgia, and he will be assisted by Andrea Piardi from Italy and Mathieu Raynal from France. Joy Neville, from Ireland, will be the woman tasked with solving any contentious issues on the TMO.
This will be the first time that Australia have taken on Portugal in an international rugby test, so there is some history to be made here. Which team will fall on the right side of history though? Well, keep on reading and you will find out my views on the matter.
💯 Australia v Portugal Betting Odds Rugby World Cup
Let us start off by having a look the odds that five top UK bookies are currently offering for three popular rugby betting markets. To find out more about the bookmakers that I mention in this prediction, click on one of the images in any of the tables, and you can browse through our bookmaker reviews.
🥇 Australia v Portugal Match Winner Odds
All the matches on the Saturday are expected to be complete walkovers, and the bookmakers are expecting something similar for this first of two matches on Sunday. The match winner odds for the other weekend matches are really not worth much of your attention, and I put these odds in the same category. Nonetheless, I know that some punters might still like to bet on the match winner so, if you are one of those, you can find the odds below:
Team | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Australia | N/A | N/A | 1.03 | 1.01 | 1.04 |
Tie | 32.75 | 32.75 | 41.00 | 51.00 | 34.00 |
Portugal | 15.60 | 15.60 | 10.00 | 7.00 | 12.00 |
➕ Australia v Scotland Handicap 3-Way Odds
There have been plenty of complete mismatches in the group stages of this Rugby World Cup, and this should be one of those games - although, considering how Australia are playing under Eddie Jones, maybe it will be a closer fought match than many rugby fans are currently expecting. When it comes to matches where there is a supposed gulf in class, it is worth taking a look at the handicap odds that are available.
With handicap betting, you have the option of shortening or lengthening the odds to try and create an advantage for yourself. In the table that I have provided you with below, you can see the three-way handicap odds that some of the best bookies are offering for the Australia vs Portugal match:
Team | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Australia (0-23) | - | - | 1.91 | - | - |
Australia (0-24) | 1.88 | 1.88 | - | - | 2.00 |
Draw (0-23) | - | - | 17.00 | - | - |
Draw (0-24) | 17.60 | 17.60 | - | - | 23.00 |
Portugal (0-23) | - | - | 1.91 | - | - |
Portugal (0-24) | 1.81 | 1.81 | - | - | 1.83 |
🏮 Australia v Portugal Asian Handicap Odds
Handicap betting does not eliminate the chances of a draw, so there will be two ways that your 3-way handicap bet can end up being a losing one. If you want to get rid of the draw option, then you can by opting for Asian handicaps. In the table below you can find that different Asian handicap odds for this Australia v Portugal match.
Team | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Australia (-22.5) | - | - | - | - | 1.80 |
Australia (-23.5) | 1.81 | 1.81 | - | 1.76 | - |
Portugal (+22.5) | - | - | - | - | 1.91 |
Australia (+23.5) | 1.81 | 1.81 | - | 1.75 | - |
The odds that I have given you in the tables above were all right at the time of writing. Odds are changing all of the time, so check out their respective sites for up to date odds.
🔍 Australia v Portugal Winner Prediction
In their previous six matches, Australia have won just the one match and lost five, while Portugal have won three, drawn one, and lost two. What about their previous matches at this year's World Cup? Well, the Aussies have played three matches, beating Georgia 35-15 and losing to both Fiji and Wales by scores of 22-15 and 40-6. Portugal, on the other hand, have played two matches, losing 28-8 Wales and drawing 18-18 with Georgia.
I do not think that either of these teams are going to make it to the last eight, and this could go down as the most embarrassing World Cups for the Aussies. Jones opted to leave his experienced players back home, and picking the youngsters is something that has imploded spectacularly - from an English point of view. If the Aussies do not make it out of the Group Stage for the first time in their World Cup history, then I would be up for a golden statue of Eddie outside Twickenham.
As bad as the Aussies are playing at the moment, I really do not expect them to lose to Portugal, who are currently ranked 16th in the world rankings. Australia should win this match pretty comfortably, so I am backing them to come out on top by 20 points.

✔️ Australia v Portugal Betting Tips
An online betting guide should always come with some betting tips, so let me now give you some of my own tips ahead of this Australia v Portugal match. However, one tip that I want to give that is related to all gambling and not just this match is to always remember to gamble responsibly. This can be done by creating a budget and making sure that you stick to it. Additionally, never chase any losses.
Now, let's move on to my betting tips for the match:
1️⃣ Match Winner: Australia to Win
If you have taken the time to read my other 2023 RWC predictions, then you will know how I feel about short odds. As much as I would laugh if Portugal were to go on to beat Australia, I do not see it happening. So, if you were to put money on Jones' men to win, there would be no potential winnings worth talking about. Thus, my advice here is to just forget about the match winner market.
If you want to go against my advice, then Spreadex are currently offering meagre odds of 1.04 for an Aussie win.
2️⃣ Handicap Winner: Portugal to Win (+23)
We already know that I think Australia will win this match comfortably - I said that I reckon they will win by around 20 points. So, with this in mind, I would be tempted to give Portugal a +23-point handicap, meaning that they would need to avoid losing by 22 points or more - if they lose by 23 points, then the match would be considered a draw.
If you want to give Portugal such a handicap, then William Hill are currently offering odds of 1.91 for them.
3️⃣ Winning Margin
The winning margin market can sometimes have very enticing odds, which is why I usually check out the offerings when a bookmaker has them available. With this bet type, your bookmaker will give a list of different point ranges, and it is up to you to try and predict the range that one of the teams will go on to win by. Like I said, I reckon that Australia will win by 20 points, so if you agree, you might be tempted the odds of 6.50 that Spreadex are offering for Australia to win by 16-20 points.
