History of the All-Ireland Hurling Championships
The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest-tier competition for inter-county hurling in Ireland and has been contested in every year except one since 1887.
The defending champions are Clare after their epic victory in 2024, their first title since 2013. Kilkenny are the most successful team with 36 titles, and have also finished runner up 29 times. Cork are the next closest with 30 titles, while Tipperary have 28 titles. There is a big gap with 4th place being Limerick with 12 titles, winning 6 of these in the last 8 years. Antrim are the only team to have competed in a final and not won a title, finishing runner up twice in 1943 and 1989.
All Ireland Hurling Championships Format
The format for the All Ireland has changed a lot in the last number of decades. It used to be a straight knockout with the winners of each province meeting in the semi finals. The qualifiers were then introduced because of the lack of competitiveness in the Ulster and Connacht Championships, so Galway and Antrim were reaching the All Ireland Semi Final every year with ease. Both these counties now play in the Leinster Championship with only the Leinster and Munster provinces competing in the All Ireland. The format for the All Ireland is as follows;
Preliminary quarter-finals (2 matches): The 3rd placed teams from the Leinster and Munster championships play the Joe McDonagh Cup champions and runners-up.
Quarter-finals (2 matches): The winners of the preliminary quarter-finals join the Leinster and Munster runners-up to make up the quarter-final pairings. Teams who may have already met in the provincial championships are kept apart in separate quarter-finals.
Semi-finals (2 matches): The winners of the quarter-finals join the Leinster and Munster champions to make up the semi-final pairings. Teams who may have already met in the provincial championships are kept apart in separate semi-finals where possible.
