History of the Munster Hurling Championships

The Munster Senior Hurling Championship is an annual Provincial hurling competition played out as part of the GAA All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. It has been played annually since 1888 and is organised by the Munster Council of the wider GAA organisation. Between 1888 and 2017 the competition had a straight knock-out format before it changed to a round-robin League format in 2018. Cork has been the most successful county in the history of the competition winning 54 titles and reaching the final on another 30 occasions. Recently however, Limerick have become the dominant force in Munster winning the last 6 titles, and are heavy favourites at the moment to make it 7 on the spin in 2025.

Munster Championship Format

Since 2018 the Munster Senior Hurling Championship has had a round robin League style format. In the Championship, the five counties taking part, Limerick, Cork, Clare, Waterford and Tipperary play each other once. Two points are awarded for a match win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss. When all five teams have each played one another, they are then ranked in a League table based on the amount of points they have each won. The top two teams go on to compete in the Munster hurling Final and battle it out for the Mick Mackey Cup, while the team in third place moves on to the All-Ireland Preliminary quarter-final stage of the Championship.
