The Battle of the United Kingdom kicks off on November 29th inside the Al Rayyan Stadium. The second round of games inside of Group B throws up the most tantalizing fixture between Wales vs England, neighbouring countries and players that know each other very well. Our review and prediction of this game will present a history of the competition for each team. We will introduce three of the star players on each team and look at how both England and Wales made it to the 2022 World Cup.
🏠 Wales Preview
The pride of Wales will be absolutely stoked for this game. For the Welsh, a win over England would be the pinnacle of success, with the World Cup itself having to be relegated to second place. This will be no easy game for the Wales team, but England are by far no perfect opponent, and the Sons of Speed will be looking to take advantage of the opportunity to give them a good thrashing. Whether it happens or not awaits to be seen, but of the two teams, the Welsh might just be the more determined.
🏆 Competition History
The Qatar 2022 World Cup will be a landmark event for the nation of Wales. They had not qualified for a World Cup since 1958, where they finished 6th. If they manage the same feat, there will be no complaints from their people back home. Will their lack of experience allow them to have no fear and sail on through to the next stage, or are experienced minds needed in such circumstances?
✔️ Qualification and Road to the Competition 2022
To make up for the many years and decades missed, the Welsh didn’t hold back when it came to the qualifiers. They successfully navigated the qualifying group stages and then the qualifiers. They finished second place in their group, which means that a place on the plane to Qatar had to be won via a knockout game.
Here are the results of their qualifying and knockout games.

⭐ Wales Players to Watch
The Welsh team is a unit, there are very few stars that would be able to walk into any other team. So, who of the squad will play in the game against England and give them something to worry about? Here we look at three of the star players that we believe could impact the game and unbalance and potentially upset the England team.
- Gareth Bale: 106 caps, 39 goals, and 22 assists. Bale is without question the greatest Welsh footballer since George Best. He is also facing his first and last World Cup. On his day, the best player in the world, but age has tamed his prowess at times. Deadly freekick taker, powerful long-range shooting capabilities, dribbling skill, and passing a ball is made with perfection. England’s greatest concern for the Group stages is this man. Position: Forward.
- Daniel James: 36 caps, 5 goals, 5 assists, and 5 yellows. While he may lack the finishing touch, James is an absolute threat to any team. Speed and pace, with darting runs in from the wing will cause an issue for the England backline. He will look to draw the fouls and be waiting off the fullbacks to make runs in behind the defence. A pain to play against. Position: Midfield.
- Brennan Johnson: 13 caps, 2 goals, and 1 assist. One of the players in the tournament that could land the Young Player of the Tournament award if Wales can escape the Group B stages. His talents include dribbling, pace, passing, and can get the odd goal here and there. Position: Midfield.
☍ England Preview
Whilst the Welsh will look to draw blood from the England team, under Southgate, this game will be approached more professionally and very by the book. The England team facing this World Cup and the Wales squad may look similar to the Euro Finalists, but their form has been questionable since that competition. For either of these teams to seal a way out of Group B, there has to be a winner and that adds more pressure and this could lead to a very nervy game from the English.
🏆 Competition History
England and the World Cup competition have a close bond. Only three times in the history of the FIFA World Cup competition has England not qualified. The nation's biggest success was in 1966 when they beat Germany to win the trophy. England does seem to struggle to get beyond the Round of 16 and are very inconsistent in their performances. In 2014, they didn’t get out of the Group Stages and in 2018, they end up finishing 4th, after losing in the Semi-finals to Croatia. England hadn’t finished this high in the World Cup since 1990.
✔️ Qualification and Road to the Competition 2022
For nations like England, their routes to any footballing competition do seem a little weaker than most other nations out there. Qualifying is no surprise when you see the levels they are up against. So, here’s how the England team managed to book their place in the surroundings of the Qatar FIFA World Cup.

⭐ England Players to Watch
Who are the England players that will make you think twice about your World Cup predictions? Which player can change the game and win the game against the Welsh? Here we highlight three England star players that could help drive their team out of the Group Stages.
- Harry Kane: With 73 caps and 50 goals, there is no question that if England is to succeed, then they need Kane to be fit and on fire! Kane is a player that dominates the opponent’s half. He will stalk the ball, by dropping deep to set up play and will hang onto the last defender to make direct runs onto crossing balls. He has a lethal strike and can take a mean free kick as well. Position: Forward.
- Kalvin Phillips: 23 caps, 1 assist, and 3 bookings. Whilst having the worst start to a season because of injury, the fact is that Southgate heavily relies on his qualities. He has only been on a losing side for England once. And when he doesn’t play, the team doesn’t quite perform well. If fit and starting, he will be a tournament star. Position: Midfield.
- Phil Foden : 16 caps, 2 international goals, and 6 assists. This is England's biggest rising talent and many will expect him to perform to a very high standard. However, while he does it weekly for this club team, chances in the England squad have been lacking. It might be a case that Foden makes a substitution impact, but this is fine because either way, he can be deadly in 15 minutes or the full 90. Position: Midfield.
